Reblogged from Maria V A Johnson:
One of the hardest parts about writing is getting the level of detail correct. If you don’t describe something well enough, how are the readers supposed to connect to it? On the other hand, if you describe too much they will give up reading it completely.
It has always been a balancing act, between description and plot. One thing you need to remember though is that a story should always be either plot or character driven; it cannot be driven on description.
This blog post concentrates on writing style. the wonderful thing about being a writer, and belonging t a community of writers, is that you get to experience a diversity of writing styles, even within your genre.
It's called The Voice.
Every author has one, and it makes the work of that author recognizable to his/her readers.
But this post goes beyond that. It discusses the way an author writes. Some like to completely immerse their novel in the language of their chosen era and use tremendously descriptive language to move their story forward. Some writers use their language sparingly, preferring their dialogue to push it through.
How do you feel about this in the context of Romance novels? do you want overly descriptive text and do you want it complete with the language/cant of the era you ar reading, or do you like more action and dialogue, and use your imagination?i
